NCN51 Cycling Farcilities

As part of the construction of NCN51 out of Oxford, and to mark the milennium or some such, a bridge was built over Elsfield Way, the A40 where it is the Oxford northern by-pass. It goes out of Wren Road in Sunnymead over to Cutteslowe Park where it joins Holt Weir Close, effectively reopening a route out of the city along Water Eaton Lane that was cut half a century before by the construction of the by-pass.

From the Sunnymead end of the bridge you can see a divided path to the left of the bridge which leads to the by-pass and - through the barriers - that the bridge itself is also divided with one side surfaced in the green kryptonite gravel used for cycle lanes in Oxford. The bridge itself turns left into that sunset behind the trees.

But wait -- what is that half way up the ramp?

Oh, look! It is a set of barriers on the cycle side of the ramp. Surely they cannot have been put there to make sure that cyclists cross the painted white line and use the pedestrian side?

At least it has been fitted with reflectors and has a light on a post alongside it, so that you can see it at nights.
